    Your role and responsibilities :
    In this role, you will have the opportunity to gain vocational experience through a temporary work placement. Each
    day, you will acquire knowledge by performing tasks as directed. You will also showcase your expertise by supporting
    ABB’s operations and enhancing personal education/employment opportunities.

    The work model for the role is: #LI-Onsite

    This role is contributing to the Materials team at the ABB corporate research center in Switzerland. In the frame of a
    six-month internship scheduled to start in July or August 2026, you will be able to put theory into practice by
    contributing to our projects related to future energy technologies.


    You will be mainly accountable for:

    - You will significantly contribute to our current research projects focusing on metals, alloys, and metal matrix
    composites as well as the associated manufacturing processes for ABB's innovative switchgear products
    - You prepare alloys and metal matrix composites and optimize their manufacturing processes on the lab-scale
    - You analyze materials and engineering prototypes using metallographic preparation, optical microscopy and other
    techniques to obtain a good understanding of the relationship between process parameters, microstructure, and material
    performance
    - You evaluate the obtained data, document your findings and present them to the team

    You will join a highly motivated and multidisciplinary team that is passionate about materials, where you will be able
    to thrive.


    Qualifications for the role:

    - You currently pursue a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Materials Science/Engineering or a related discipline
    (completion of at least six semesters); official enrollment is essential
    - You have a general understanding of metals and metal matrix composite materials and the related processing
    technologies, and you are keen in deepening your knowledge in this field
    - You have experience in specimen preparation by metallography, microstructure analysis by light microscopy and you
    enjoy laboratory work
    - Experience in powder metallurgy, sintering, brazing, know-how in experimental methods (XRD, SEM, EDX, EBSD,
    Hardness, etc.) is an advantage
    - Fluent command of English, both written and spoken; German is a plus
